Myopia Control
What is Myopia?Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long and light focuses in front of the retina. A person with myopia can see clearly up close, but objects in the distance look fuzzy or out of focus. It’s often called ‘short-sightedness’ or ‘near-sightedness’.
Did you know that by 2050 it is estimated that 50% of the global population will be myopic?
To prevent this from happening, new exciting standards for children are in place to help lower this estimation! Our TeamDr. Main and her myopia champion Jonie are trained in the full field of myopia management. Our opticians Anna and Jacki are qualified in dispensing myopia control eyeglasses. We are all excited to be able to offer you the highest standard of care in myopia management!
How to get started? To become enrolled in our myopia program we need to first see your child for a specific myopia exam (different from their OHIP covered eye exams). This will establish a baseline for future comparison and allow us to discuss which treatment option(s) would be the most appropriate for your child.
We then follow your child every 6 months to monitor the effectiveness of our treatment plan. This includes measuring the length of the eye at each visit. |
Why Manage Myopia in Children?Did you know that for every 1.0 Dioptre increase in your child’s prescription your child’s risk of eye disease in the future increases?
